Lafayette Sunnyside Intermediate School is located in the heart of beautiful Lafayette, Indiana between a major research institution and a booming manufacturing corridor. In the Fall of 2010 after a complete building renovation was concluded, all 5th and 6th graders for the Lafayette School Corporation began attending Sunnyside. These students attend Tecumseh Junior High for 7th and 8th grade and then Jefferson High School.

Beginning in the Fall of 2014, LSIS became a mobile 1:1 Apple iPad school, meaning every student and faculty member is equipped with an iPad for learning. Our STEM teachers instruct students with integrated Math and Science while the Humanities teachers instruct with integrated Language Arts and Social Studies. A student's schedule includes two main core intructional periods in the school day to effectively implement the curriculum.

All students are enrolled in our nationally recognized PE classes for one class period every other day. 5th graders receive additional instruction in Art, Keyboarding, Health, and Music, as well as a remediation/enrichment Advisory Period. 6th grade students have the option of Band, Choir, Orchestra, or Academic Support tin addition to their Art, Computer Applications, and Health courses. Our 5th grade Exploratory Music course is especially unique: students spend time in orchestra, band, and choir. They have the opportunity to learn to play each of the major instrument groups during this time and are then able to make a more informed decision regarding their 6th grade performing arts options. Mandarin Chinese has also been a recent addition to the curriculum, with a native speaker teaching the language and culture. Within all of these courses, the needs of exceptional learners are addressed and met, whether emotionally disabled, learning disabled, gifted and talented, or severely disabled: we have courses and staff members that meet the needs of each child. 

Sunnyside offers a special education program with the students fully included in regular academic classes or taking special education classes or a combination thereof. Sunnyside also offers a self-contained emotionally handicap placement and houses the Greater Lafayette Area Special Services class for the mild to severe handicap program. Sunnyside offers a full core subject gifted and talented program at both grade levels. Students may be selected to participate in a full or partial gifted and talented curriculum.

As mentioned previously, Sunnyside underwent an “extreme makeover.” The old academic wing and office areas from the 1950s was demolished and replaced with a state of the art facility. Each classroom is equipped with an interactive whiteboard, AppleTV, teacher and student desktop computers, and a sound amplification system. In August of 2013, Sunnyside gained full WiFi capabilities to prepare for additional technologies in the coming future. In addition, we have a digital learning lab/"makerspace" available for use by classroom teachers, as well as mobile laptop labs. Two other computer labs house our keyboarding and computer applications courses.  

The rooms and hallways at Sunnyside are bright, open, and welcoming. Our art room and library feature stunning floor to ceiling windows that enhance the learning environment. The portion of the building that was kept during construction also received a remarkable facelift. The building retained two gyms and a full theater auditorium. The band, choir, and orchestra rooms were completely renovated and classrooms in the basement were brightened, rearranged, and brought up to the standard of the rest of the building.

The community of Lafayette places a high value on education and Purdue University, a nationally known engineering, agriculture and liberal arts college, is located nearby. Sunnyside students benefit greatly from Purdue’s proximity as Sunnyside is a proud Purdue Professional Development School partner which allows university students and researchers to interact with and enrich our educational programming.
